November 27th, 2018 marked the 7th annual #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that falls directly after two of the largest shopping days of the year. People across the world take a moment away from the wants of holiday shopping and take time to give back to people in need.

The results of 2018’s #GivingTuesday were astronomical. According to The Chronicle of Philanthropy, an astounding $380 million dollar was raised, which is an increase of 27% compared to 2017. #GivingTuesday continues to grow year after year.

The results since the first #GivingTuesday held in 2012:

  • 2012:  $10 million
  • 2013:  $28 million
  • 2014:  $46 million

Community Campaigns

Aside from worldwide giving, individual communities are taking on the day of giving together as one powerful force. According to GivingTuesday.com, community campaigns are either a geographic coalition of nonprofits working together with a central organizer, or a single nonprofit that is rallying a cause community in a community-wide effort. There are over 100 community campaigns in the United States.

SHARE Charlotte:  #GivingTuesdayCLT is Charlotte, NC’s local campaign leveraging the global #GivingTuesday movement with hundreds of Charlotte nonprofits, corporations, local businesses, professional sports teams and community organizations, all rallying together around one common goal – to DO GOOD! In 2018, #GivingTuesdayCLT raised over $4 million in one week!

NY Gives Day:  #NYGivesDay is a 24-hour online challenge to celebrate nonprofits across the state of New York. Nonprofits from across the Empire State work together to raise awareness, collect donations, and build a stronger sense of philanthropy throughout local communities. In 2018, they raised $2.2 million from over 15,000 donors!

GAgives:  Created by The Georgia Center for Nonprofits (GCNP), GAgives on #GivingTuesday empowers all Georgia nonprofits to increase funds, gain new supporters, and raise awareness through one 24-hour statewide marathon of giving. Since 2012, they have raised over $28 million and in 2018 alone, they raised an impressive $7.8 million!

Technology and Philanthropy

Year after year, technology is changing the way people give. Nowadays, people can donate to a charity of their choice simply by sending a text, adding it to their Amazon cart, or rallying a cause on Facebook. In 2018, #GivingTuesday had 14.2 billion social media impressions, leading to $380 million raised online.

This year, Cureo was proud to be a sponsor of GAgives. Our nonprofit collaboration software helped empower their movement through the use of technology. With The Georgia Center for Nonprofits taking the lead, nonprofits involved in GAgives used Cureo’s collaboration software to organize and plan their efforts.

“Rounding up our many nonprofit resources and tools in one place eased communications and made them easily accessible to the 3,000 participating nonprofits across Georgia.”  Betsy Reid with GCNP
